Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) is a fixed wing aircraft landing instrument that provides pilots with a basic visual approach slope indicator consisting of three colors depending on the angle at which the lights are viewed. This and GPIs are the most common types of visual approach slope indicator system.

REIL (Runway End Identifier Lights)

Runway End Identifier Lights (REIL) are installed at many airports to provide rapid and positive identification of the approach end of a particular runway. The system consists of a pair of synchronized flashing lights located laterally on each side of the runway threshold. REILs may be either omnidirectional or unidirectional facing the approach area.


Approach lighting is installed on the approach end of a runway and consists of a series of light-bars that extend outward from the runway end. These lighting systems are designed to allow the pilot to quickly and positively identify visibility distance in Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC).

Runway edge lights outline the edges of runways during periods of darkness or in restricted visibility conditions. These lighting systems are classified according to the intensity they are capable of producing (High, Medium, Low).
